Song of the Day (Harvest Time)

Today’s song, Harvest Time, is one I’ve wanted to record for several days now.  It’s a Whispering Hour song, and one that doesn’t really fit without the context of the other shows.  It’s my only true protest song, and it was written with my husband in mind after a conversation we had about the difference between the words reign and regime.

It took a while to record for a couple of reasons.  First, because of where and how it fits and doesn’t fit, it doesn’t get played very often so I was… hmm… WAY rusty on it and needed some time to really get better at the guitar part.  Second, with just me and the guitar, there’s this big hole where a second verse should be… Here’s where I broke down and began to play with adding things.  First came the flute, because I can’t play violin, to fill in that hole, and then I thought, “Well, while I’m at it I may as well play with drums again” and so I did, and then… THEN… because once the door is open you may as well walk through it, I added the final, and what turns out to be key ingredient.

PENS!!!

This, is quite close to how the song actually sounds in my head.

As a result, I didn’t do the usual layering of vocal and guitar parts.  I did my best to balance the five different layers I Did have, and called it enough.
